Surgical Treatment of Obesity
Operations
The three operations described below are generally agreed to be safe and effective treatments for obesity. Information on operations sourced from Australian and New Zealand Obesity Surgery Society (ANZMOSS)
Gastric Banding
In this procedure, an adjustable gastric band is placed laparoscopically around the upper stomach to create a stomach pouch. This receives food first when one eats and gives the feeling of early fullness.
Sleeve Gastrectomy
The sleeve gastrectomy (SG) is a restrictive weight loss operation. The outer part of the stomach is removed and the shape of the stomach is changed from a sac to a long narrow tube (sleeve).
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass
The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass operation is truly a by-pass of the stomach. The stomach is bypassed so that food eaten goes into a small gastric pouch and then into a loop of small bowel (the jejunum).
