Do I need a referral to see one of the Surgeons?
Yes, you will need a GP referral to see our Surgeons.
What do I need to bring to my appointment?
Please bring your:
- Referral letter
- Medicare Card/Private Health Insurance Card
- Copies of relevant investigations
Please also allow time to park and to complete your patient information form if not already done.
Where do I park?
There is free parking on Eastlake Parade and surrounding streets ranging from 30 minutes to 2 hours duration.
What is the process to have bariatric surgery?
What is the pre-operative diet and how long will I need to be on it?
We recommend at least two weeks on a VLCD (very low calorie diet) such as optifast, under the supervision of our dietitians. The resultant weight loss reduces the size of the liver, ensuring a safer operation.
Will I need tests prior to surgery?
Yes, as a minimum, patients will have a pre-operative blood test. This must be done at least a week prior to your surgery date. Depending on your other health conditions, other investigations might be required to safely perform your surgery.
How long will I be off work after bariatric surgery?
Most patients will require two weeks off work to recover from bariatric surgery.
How much does bariatric surgery cost?
The out of pocket cost of your surgery will depend on many factors.
Costs include the surgeon and surgical assistant fees, anaesthetist fee and private hospital costs (including operating theatre charges and admission). If you have private health insurance some of these costs will be covered. You will receive a full breakdown of costs in your financial consent or please call our staff for an indication of cost.
Does my private health insurance cover bariatric surgery?
The Australian Government introduced a tier system for private health insurance to allow better comparison of policies. “Gold” level policies cover bariatric surgery however it is always advisable to check with your health fund.
Do I need private health insurance to have bariatric surgery?
Private health insurance is encouraged as it covers many of the hospital costs and some of the other costs associated with your surgery. Most health insurers will cover bariatric surgery if you have top level or “Gold” cover, but will likely have a waiting time associated with new policies. Some patients choose to self-fund their surgery and may consider accessing their superannuation to assist.
Can I access my superannuation to fund bariatric surgery?
It is possible to obtain early access to your superannuation on compassionate grounds including a life-threatening illness. Further information can be found on the ATO website here (ato.gov.au/Individuals/Super).

Can I have bariatric surgery in the public health system?
The ACT Government funds a limited number of bariatric surgery operations in the public hospital system. Coordination is via the Obesity Management Service at ACT Health.
